Scripture
Psalm 33:12 ESV
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
Consider
In the aftermath of a bitterly contested election season, we remember that we are citizens of God’s kingdom first, and we recommit our allegiance to God’s rule of love, justice, and mercy. We pray together for our nation’s healing and illumination from God’s Word to help us find the best ways forward as a united people.
The following prayer is taken from Book of Common Worship. Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press (1993), 816.
For Our Country
Almighty God, you have given us this good land as our heritage.
Make us always remember your generosity and constantly do your will.
Bless our land with honest industry, sound learning, and an honorable way of life.
Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.
Make us who come from many nations with many different languages a united people.
Defend our liberties and give those whom we have entrusted with the authority of government the spirit of wisdom, that there might be justice and peace in our land.
When times are prosperous, let our hearts be thankful; and, in troubled times, do not let our trust in you fail.
We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

On whose promises have I fixed my best hopes for America, God’s or man’s?
