Scripture
Matthew 14:28-32 NLT
Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
Consider
Conflict in a relationship—whether from misunderstanding, betrayal, or outright maliciousness—can tug on our fleshly desire to return evil for evil and hurt back as we’ve been hurt. The incident may touch on deep-seated fear, a painful memory, or somehow dishonor us and spur us to defend our right to a safe, respected, and trouble-free existence.
Left to ourselves, we may allow a conflict to consume us. We focus too much attention on our suffering and what we’ve lost. We cultivate resentment, even hate, against the person who harmed us. Despair and bitterness sink our spirits and sap our strength. As we sink lower, we may fuel our anger to keep us feeling powerful and justified in our diminished state.
Jesus invites us to rise above the turmoil of a troubled relationship and walk with him in the good and righteous ways of God. Conflict loses its power to hurt and dominate us when we raise our eyes to Jesus and walk where he is walking. Only when we stop looking down at the threatening waves and fix our gaze on Jesus, who waits to save and help us, can we begin to heal and forgive and desire peace that previously seemed impossible.
Pray
Loving Savior, help me to step out of my old habits and ineffective ways of dealing with conflict and to walk with you above the conflict. Give me faith to keep my attention on you and not on the worrisome things that can pull me under. Thank you for your faithful hand that saves me when I cry out for your help.

Ponder
When conflict threatens to consume me, what might help me refocus my attention on Jesus?
