Heirs to the Promise

Scripture

Galatians 3:28-29 NLT

There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Consider

What was God’s promise to Abraham, and what can it mean for us?

God’s Old Testament covenant with Abraham was twofold. There was the material promise that Abraham would father a great nation and inherit property in the land of Canaan. More important for us was the spiritual promise that through Abraham’s descendants all the nations of the world would be blessed.

Jesus Christ, the holy fruit of Abraham’s bloodline, fulfilled this second promise of blessing through his earthly ministry, death, and resurrection. As followers of Christ, you and I accept the responsibility of inheritance that Jesus bequeathed. We carry the hope and the power of the gospel into the world around us—into our families, our friendships, our neighborhoods, our business relationships. We are the new covenant heirs of God’s promise to Abraham. We are the couriers of blessing to our twenty-first-century peers.

As heirs of God’s promise, we bless others not with our own goodness but with the goodness of Christ who lives in us. We bring people face-to-face with the eternal One who touches and heals them through our acts of obedience. When we show kindness and patience, it is Christ’s nature they see. When we forgive, it is Christ’s forgiveness that opens their hearts. When we love, it is the compassion of Christ that mends their brokenness and leads them to repentance.

Pray

FATHER, I marvel that you choose to bless the world through my imperfect obedience. Make me a worthy heir of your promise to Abraham. Give me grace to extend kindness to the most difficult people in my life. Purify my heart and reshape my thoughts to align ever more closely with yours.

Reflect

Genesis 12:2-3; 2 Peter 1:3-4

Ponder

Based on the way I handle conflict, how would others describe the nature of Christ who lives in me?

Testing God

Scripture

Judges 6:36-37 NLT

Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.”

Consider

Is it ever right to test God? Gideon—the least important member of the least important clan in all of Israel—has been called by God to raise an army and defeat Israel’s Midianite oppressors.

Caught!

Scripture

Galatians 6:1 NIV

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

Consider

The phrase “someone who is caught in a sin” is usually interpreted to mean someone who has been discovered sinning. A second interpretation, however, implies someone who has been ensnared by sin and cannot free himself. Like a fly in a spider’s trap, this person is caught in a sticky web and needs help from others to disentangle himself.

Words Like Honey

Scripture

Proverbs 16:24 NIV

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Consider

In giving us the gift of human speech, God also gives us a serious responsibility. Words we speak to one another have an almost magical power to heal or to hurt. Gracious, kindly words cost us little, yet so often we withhold them out of stubbornness or pique. Even our silence can sting when someone needs the balm of our forgiveness.

Your Beautiful Essence

Scripture

1 John 3:2-3 NLT

Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.

Consider

God has given us an amazing promise. Not only will we receive eternal life but we will be changed into the likeness of the Son and will share in his glory. This means that our bodies, our minds, our personalities—everything that we are—will be purified and restored.
