Prayer for Election Day

Scripture

Psalm 47:7-9 NIV

For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

Prayer

Most Holy God, my Savior and my King:

With the very breath you give me, I bless your Name. I thank you for the privilege of living in the United States of America. I thank you for your abundant graces and help to America’s people and leaders as we have struggled over the decades to forge a nation that rules with justice and compassion. I thank you for all the times you stepped in and saved our people from disaster while we remained unaware. I thank you for partnering with America to bless others around the world who have needed help and hope. I thank you for the courage and wisdom of our early fathers and mothers who dreamed of living on a new shore under the banner of your mighty and benevolent sovereignty.

Our nation now stands at the threshold of an important election. Weary from months of pandemic shutdowns, violence in our streets, and hateful political rhetoric, we have nowhere to turn but to you, O God, for help and deliverance. Forgive us, I pray, for all the ways we have forsaken you—as individuals and as a nation—resisting your righteous ways to pursue our selfish agendas. Give us discerning minds and ears to hear your Spirit’s counsel as we consider how to cast our votes. More than ever, I ask for the mind of Christ so that I may rightly evaluate choices in the light of your kingdom ways and holy desires, and choose your words of truth over artful political speeches.

Fight for us, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Snatch our nation from the jaws of wickedness and restore her commitment to freedom and purity of purpose. Rekindle the love for you on which America was founded. Reawaken in us your righteous principles and values that will lead your people into peace and prosperity. Give us love and respect for one another and help us to bridge disagreements and heal in the aftermath of this election. Help us to pray for all those who are elected, even those for whom we did not vote, because we trust that all earthly rulers belong to you and can exist only under the authority your sovereign rule.

These things I ask in the strong and eternal Name of Jesus.

Abide In Me

Scripture

John 15:5, 7-8 NRSV

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.…If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

Consider

Forgiveness is divine fruit from the vine of Christ that we bear in our lives. Such fruit glorifies God because it makes God’s love and mercy visible to those around us.

Meaningful Suffering

Scripture

1 Peter 4:12 ESV

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

Consider

Suffering. It’s an unpleasant word, conjuring images of physical pain, mental anguish, and spiritual desolation. Nobody wants it. In fact, we take great pains to avoid it. We like to think suffering is an anomaly we can escape by living right and making wise choices. Suffering may surprise us when it hits, and we immediately start looking for reasons to explain it. There must be someone to blame, a behavior we can adjust.

The Gospel in Forgiving

Scripture

Psalm 96:2 CEB

Sing to the LORD! Bless his name! Share the news of his saving work every single day!

Consider

Saint Francis of Assisi once said, “It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.” In other words, the way we treat others shows our heart, and people are quick to spot a hypocrite. If we live out the gospel that we believe, then people will be attracted to Christ because of what they see in us. If, however, our behavior doesn’t bear out the faith we profess to have, then people will dismiss us as frauds and likely dismiss our God as well.

Do It Now

Scripture

Psalm 90:12 NLT

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.

Consider

We are not wise to think we have all the time in the world to mend a relationship, or to say what needs to be said, or to ask for someone’s forgiveness. Too many times we let a difficult situation drift either because we don’t know what to do about it or because we are unwilling to do what we know needs to be done. Although we can’t know how much time we really have, we can trust in God’s ongoing plan to redeem and restore hearts and relationships.
