Sharing God’s Sorrow

Scripture

Matthew 26:36-38 NLT

Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Consider

In the painful hour before his arrest, Jesus asked Peter, James, and John to keep watch with him. God’s heart beating in the Son felt sorrow and grief, and in his distress he sought the comfort and companionship of his closest friends.

Come, Follow Me

Scripture

Matthew 4:18-20 NIV

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

Consider

Peter and his brother Andrew knew that Jesus was seeking more than mere traveling companions. At this point the brothers were familiar with John’s testimony about Jesus and had likely heard the itinerant rabbi’s teachings and possibly witnessed healings.

Don’t Get Tired of Doing Good

Scripture

Galatians 6:9 NLT

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

Consider

We’ve all experienced that difficult relationship, the one that will not improve no matter how hard we try. We’ve been kind, patient, cheerful, and forgiving, but to no avail—the other person refuses to budge. Our efforts to do good feel one-sided and pointless. How can we keep on doing good in the face of such resistance?

Meditation for Thanksgiving Week

The following prayer is taken from Praying for the Dawn: A resource book for the ministry of healing, edited by Ruth Burgess and Kathy Galloway.

I pray God will use these words to tend the broken places in your heart and encourage you with the assurance of His unwavering love for you.

Luke 15:13-14

He went to a country far away…and spent everything he had…He was left without a thing.

Beloved God,

with the eagerness of a child you wait for our coming,

with the urgency of a lover, you long for our return,

with the anxious heart of a parent, your arms ache to hold us.

We Have A King

Scripture

Judges 21:25 NLT

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

Consider

The phrase, “Israel had no king,” appears four times in the Book of Judges. Each time it is associated with a story of sin and destruction among people who had no moral compass outside themselves. In truth, God was Israel’s King, but they refused to acknowledge God’s authority over their lives. We, too, have a King. And like Israel, we often resist our King’s authority and prefer to go our own way.
