Child of Light

Scripture

John 12:35, 36 NRSV

Jesus said to them…”While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”

Matthew 5:14, 16 NRSV

“You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Consider

Scripture tells us that God, in addition to being love, is also light: “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Jesus came to us as Immanuel—the God-Light incarnate among us.

God’s Love In Us

Scripture

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a NIV

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Consider

This excerpt from the “Love Chapter” in 1 Corinthians may be familiar to us from many readings, both personal and from the pulpit, recited at weddings or printed in Dayspring Valentine cards.

Shine Goodness

Scripture

Proverbs 3:27 NIV

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.

Consider

The Message translates the above passage this way: Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person. It is a wondrous responsibility, being God’s hand for a particular person in a particular situation. And the truth is, sometimes we don’t feel like handing out goodness, especially to people who have hurt, angered, or offended us.

East from West

Scripture

Psalm 103:12-14 NRSV

As far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him. For he knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust.

Consider

Imagine that picture: as far as the east is from the west. To gaze upon the east, you must completely turn away from the west. You cannot look at them together.

So it is with grace and sin. To look at one is to turn your back on the other. This is what God does when God forgives our sins.

Lord of Troubled Relationships

Scripture

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Consider

When we choose to follow Christ, he takes ownership of everything about us—our bodies, our thoughts and behaviors, our plans, our dreams. He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us align our hearts with his and to accomplish the work he has particularly assigned each of us to do. The price he paid for us includes his right to lordship over our relationships.
