Morning Compass

Mark 1:35 (New International Version)

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Consider

How Jesus loved to spend time with his Father! In the wee hours of the morning, it’s as if he heard the Father whisper, “Get up and walk with Me. I have something to show you.” And Jesus would leave his warm bed and follow his Father out into the cold, quiet darkness, anticipating the joy of being together and listening to his Father’s voice.

Old Wounds: Tricky or Treatable?

Philippians 4:6-7 (New International Version)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Consider

Our oldest wounds can be our trickiest sources of pain and confusion.

Old injuries don’t just fade away with our past and disappear. Rather, they go underground where they fester and generate emotional sore spots that can be easily bruised and re-injured.

Shine Goodness

Proverbs 3:27 (New International Version)

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.

Consider

The Message translates the above passage this way: Never walk away from someone who deserves help; your hand is God’s hand for that person.

It’s a wondrous responsibility, being God’s hand for a particular person in a particular situation. And the truth is, sometimes we don’t feel like handing out goodness, especially to people who have hurt, angered, or offended us.

Pride That Poisons

What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit God has placed within us is filled with envy? But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” So humble yourselves before God.

Consider

Pride is a powerful enemy of healthy relationships.

Its weapon is self-deception—when pride rules us, we fail to see ourselves as we truly are. Pride blinds us to our faults and accentuates our virtues.

Thankful No Matter What

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (The Living Bible)

Always be joyful. Always keep on praying. No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Consider

When life hits us hard, it’s difficult to be thankful. How much easier it is to throw up our hands and cry out to God, “Why me? Why this?”

In the short passage above, notice that the apostle Paul does not counsel us to begin with thanksgiving. Rather, he encourages us to be joyful, then prayerful, and in the end, thankful.
