Seek God Today

Scripture

Matthew 6:31-34 NIV

So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Consider

We live in uncertain times, yet how many people in previous generations have uttered those exact same words?

God Our Help

Isaiah 40:28-31 NRSV

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Consider

I can think of no time when the call for Christians to pray has been more urgent.

Know My Name

Psalm 91:14-15 NRSV

Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.

Consider

What can it possibly mean to a sovereign and all-powerful God that we know his Name and call upon it? The psalmist suggests an intimate relationship that pleases God, a reciprocal friendship that enjoys mutual love, honor, and trust. God invites us to call on Him with the familiarity of a favored child and promises to love and respect us in return.

Righteousness In Action

Matthew 5:20 ESV

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Consider

Righteousness is relational. It is purity of intent that springs from a heart surrendered to God, and it manifests its presence in our words, attitudes, and behaviors. Although God confers righteousness through the work of the Spirit, we must consent to being transformed and committing ourselves to a new way of interacting with the world. Moreover, learning to live righteously is a process that takes time and discipline.

The Good Neighbor

Luke 10:36-37 NIV

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Consider

Perhaps it’s animal instinct, but we humans tend to seek out people of our own kind. We group ourselves with others who think like us, look like us, live like us, vote like us. We can be wary, skeptical, and dismissive of “those others” who think and act differently from the way we and our friends do.
