The Truth About Neighbors

Scripture

Exodus 20:16 NRSV

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Consider

Using our words wisely is a powerful responsibility. Unique to the human race, language can build up community or burn down bridges, raise a spirit or destroy a reputation. As James points out in his letter, we use our words to praise God and, in the next breath, to curse a neighbor created in God’s image. “My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so” (3:12).

What we tell ourselves about our neighbor determines the nature of our relationship.

When You Pray, Forgive

Scripture

Mark 11:25 NIV

“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Consider

Scripture

Isaiah 58:13-14a NLT

“Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the LORD’s holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly. Then the LORD will be your delight.”

Consider

The fourth law of God’s Ten Commandments directed his people to set aside the seventh day of every week for remembrance and worship of God. Rooted in the Hebrew word shabbat, meaning “to cease or desist,” Sabbath offered a regular break from ordinary human pursuits.

Sacred Assignment

Scripture

2 Corinthians 13:9b-11 ESV

Your restoration is what we pray for. For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not tearing down. Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Consider

If we believe God has a particular plan for each of us, then we also accept that our circumstances and relationships are not random.
