Defeating Evil

Scripture

1 John 5:4-5 (New Living Translation)

Every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

Consider

When trouble comes at us through a relationship, it helps to remember that we are part of an ongoing spiritual battle. Satan is at war with God, and part of his strategy to defeat God is to hurt his children.

The pain we suffer in human conflict may drive us away from God, or it can lead us closer.

Beyond Forgiving

Scripture

2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (New International Version)

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Consider

To be reconciled means to restore normal or friendly relations with someone who has been opposed to you. To reconcile means to no longer regard the other person as an enemy but as a friend or brother.

Receive the Good

Scripture

Psalm 103:2 (New Living Translation)

Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Consider

How often do we overlook the good things in our lives because we are always looking for something better?

God showers us with blessings, yet so many of them go unnoticed. He gives us beautiful sunsets, magnificent starry skies, and the reassuring rhythm of night following day and season following season. He gives us bodies that can enjoy tasty foods and sexual pleasure, and hearts and lungs that work ceaselessly for our benefit.

In Satan’s Grip

Scripture

Job 3:25-26 (New International Version)

What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me. I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.

Consider

When Satan set out to test Job’s faith, he went straight for the jugular. He knew what Job feared, and he attacked him at his weakest point.

Satan often attacks us in our relationships, where we are most vulnerable. If you are experiencing a painful quarrel, don’t discount Satan’s role in the conflict.

Do Not Steal

Scripture

Exodus 20:15 (New International Version)

“You shall not steal.”

Consider

Do not steal. It’s the eighth commandment given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai, and the intent seems plain enough: Don’t take someone’s wallet; don’t steal his car. Don’t empty your neighbor’s bank account using a false identity.

Deeper study, however, reveals the “do not steal” principle permeating several other commandments as well:

#6 Do not murder (don’t steal your neighbor’s life).

#7 Do not commit adultery (don’t steal your neighbor’s spouse).

#8 Do not steal (don’t steal your neighbor’s possessions).
