Hearts Toward God

Scripture

Hebrews 3:12, 14 (New Living Translation)

Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.…For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.

Consider

It’s a package deal: Choosing to follow Christ not only rescues us from God’s judgment but also commits our lives to his lordship. From the moment of our surrender, our daily challenges become testing grounds for our character.

Thanksgiving List

Scripture

Psalm 103:2 (New Living Translation)

Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Consider

We are prone to overlook many little blessings in life because we are looking for bigger and more dramatic ones.

Perhaps we have asked God to meet some critical need—deliverance from an illness or addiction, or the mending of a family breach. We may have been dealt an unfair blow and are waiting for God to make it right or at least to give us a reason why it happened.

Choosing Sides

Scripture

Joshua 5:13-15 (New International Version)

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Reckoning Our Worth

Scripture

Galatians 5:25-26 (New Living Translation)

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Consider

Conceit and envy are flip sides of the same belief: My value as a person depends on how well my life compares with yours. Whether we feel superior to others or inferior, those feelings indicate an area in our lives that is still submitted to the world’s leading rather than to the Spirit’s.

Blessed Gifting

Scripture

Acts 20:35b (English Standard Version)

Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Consider

The idea that giving is better than receiving makes intuitive sense. Think of the joy you’ve experienced when giving a gift to someone you care about. Much of the fun of celebrating birthdays and holidays is in surprising and pleasing others with our offerings.

Some offerings, however, may seem too costly to bestow freely. Consider what it means, for example, to forgive someone who has wronged you.
