Open Door

Scripture

Matthew 23:13-14 NLT

“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.”

Consider

When we choose to follow Christ as Lord, God gives us the privilege and responsibility to shine his goodness and mercy in whatever circumstances we find ourselves. Paul references this truth in his letter to the young church at Corinth when he observes that God makes his appeal to unbelievers through the good deeds of his people.

Our efforts to forgive and restore a damaged relationship, therefore, are always about more than simply resolving a conflict. Peacemaking is a godly privilege and responsibility that God uses to turn minds and hearts toward himself. Especially in a difficult and hurtful situation, showing kindness to someone who expects your anger draws attention to the Spirit living within you as surely as a candle flame draws attention in a dark room. Jesus tells his disciples to let that flame shine bright, lighting the way into God’s Kingdom.

Conversely, when we allow bitterness and selfishness to dictate our behaviors, we, in effect, shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. We deny them the blessing and hope that God intends to offer them through our efforts to love and forgive them. God uses our simple acts of kindness and generosity to work deep wonders in people whose hearts can be softened to receive him.

Pray

FATHER, I like to think that my little grudges and resentments don’t matter much to you. However, I realize that every selfish deed displaces a generous one that could shine your light into someone’s life. Lead me away from my bitter thoughts and make me an open door that invites others into your Kingdom.

Ponder

How could my offer of forgiveness give someone a glimpse of God?
