A meditation inspired by Psalm 16.
Keep your loving eye upon me, O Lord my God,
for you alone can keep me safe.
Every good thing in my life comes from you.
Who are the true heroes in our midst?
Those who delight in your Name
and proclaim the good news of your love.
Other celebrities we admire run from you to pursue other gods
and find themselves sliding from one sin into another.
“Come on,” they call.
“Worship with us at the altar of Self-glory.
A small sacrifice will gain you wealth and success!”
I refuse to be dazzled by their rhetoric;
I shut my heart against their crooked schemes.
You are my Lord and my God.
I will not waste my life on selfish pursuits
or hold in reverence any name but yours.
You alone are my portion, my inheritance in Christ Jesus.
You have made a place for me in your kingdom
and set a hedge around my life.
You give me a cup overflowing with graces
meant to be shared—
patience, gentleness, loving kindness, forgiveness.
You bless other people through my faithfulness
and teach me how to be like Jesus.
I bless you, Lord, with all my body and soul.
Even in my sleep you counsel me,
and I wake up renewed.
You never leave me alone
but stay by my side,
guiding and reassuring me
so that no calamity can ever shake me.
I rejoice because nothing, not even death, can steal me away from you.
Though my flesh will fail, you will deliver me from the grave
and raise me with Christ to sit at your right hand.
Every hour you show me how much you love me.
Every moment you lead me deeper into a friendship that will last forever.
