Holy Communion

Scripture

Psalm 46:10 (NRSV)

“Be still, and know that I am God!”

Consider

Our Father asks us to separate ourselves from the noise of our busy lives so we can give him our full attention. Below is an expanded interpretation of God’s request for this sacred meeting with us.

[God speaking]:

My child, as you prepare to meet Me, be still, and know that I am God!

Still your BODY—

  • Plant your feet firmly on the ground.
  • Close your eyes to shut out visual distractions. Turn your gaze inward so you can see Me.
  • Release your hands; let them rest. Relax your fingers to lie limp and open, grasping at nothing.
  • Loosen your jaw; let your tongue lie idle in your mouth.
  • Release the tension from your limbs. Unclench the muscles that keep you alert and guarded. You are safe with Me. Let your thighs and legs sink with the weight of gravity, releasing tension through the soles of your feet to disappear into the earth.
  • Become so still that the only movements you detect in your body are the rise and fall of your chest and the beating of your heart.

Still your MIND—

  • Quiet the noise in your brain.
  • Gather your thoughts into a loose bundle and, without examining them, set them aside. Imagine them in a container or outside the door of your room. You can reclaim them later.
  • Set aside your lists, your agendas, your time schedule. They do not need your attention right now.
  • If words are pressing, let them rise to the surface and gently move them to where your other thoughts are resting.
  • Listen to the silence. Let the silence fill the space that your thoughts and words and lists have vacated.

Still your HEART—

  • Open your heart to Me until every shadowy corner is bathed in my light.
  • Let your feelings surface and gently set them aside. Do not stop to label them now.
  • Check for residual feelings that shy away from my light. Let Me hold them for you.

As you listen for Me in the silence that now fills you, be still, and know that I am God!

Know that I am God of your BODY

  • I am the breath that fills your lungs and the engine that drives your heart.
  • I gave you life in your mother’s womb and ordained the days of your life before you were born.
  • I know your flesh as the Creator who formed you and the God-made-flesh who was crucified in your place.

Know that I am God of your MIND—

  • My divine will is a perfect template for your thoughts and action plans.
  • Lay Me as the foundation for your moral choices.
  • Write my truth into the story of your life that you are composing each day.

Know that I am God of your HEART—

  • I am your Rock and your Shelter.
  • Draw your identity and worth from the deep well of our friendship.
  • Discard the shame messages of the world, all the false narratives that compete with my love for you and trick you into following wrong and hurtful paths.

As you prepare to leave this holy time of communion, be still, and know that I am God!

  • Know that I go with you, my dear child. I will never abandon you nor betray you.
  • I am closer to you than your next breath and as real as the pulse at your wrist. I am the faithful Witness to your every thought and the compassionate Confidant for your dreams and emotions.
  • As you reclaim the thoughts and lists you set aside, let Me carry them for you. I delight in being your Strength and Wisdom, your Guide and your Protector.
  • Preserve our sacred time together as a secret retreat in your innermost being. Return often so I can remind you how loved and precious you are to Me.

Pray

FATHER, fill my stillness with your Spirit, that I may know you are God.

Ponder

Schedule another time when you can be absolutely still and open to God’s Spirit.
